Spiderman III
From Fr. Mike, a Dominican priest who is a lead contributor at an excellent blog called Intentional Disciples:Christianity Today has a movie review about the new Spiderman movie that might be interesting to read if you plan to see the movie... Apparently, the Peter Parker/Spiderman character has to deal with his own pride and vengeance. According to Mark Moring, the reviewer, "The movie's tagline is "The Battle Within," and the story is reminiscent of St. Paul's struggle with his sinful nature in Romans 7: "I do not understand what I do," the apostle writes. 'For what I want to do, I do not do, but what I hate, I do.' The film is rife with themes of love, friendship, pride, vengeance, confession, repentance, forgiveness and redemption. No kidding—it's all there … not to mention a critical scene in a church that I won't say much about here."
If you've seen the film, would you recommend it to others? Is it something that might generate a discussion on the topics of temptation, repentance, confession, forgiveness, redemption or virtue with someone who is not a Catholic?

This movie was far too goofy for me to recommend for serious discussion. The more serious and solid themes of the film were left partially or lazily developed after the 2 hours and 20 minutes of runtime in favor of extended silly scenes and scenes of Kristin Dunst singing.
Well, I probably won't see it due to not seeing Spiderman I and II... and I'm not sure, after reading that, if I would like to hear Kristen Dunst singing :) But, nevertheless, maybe some (in the fashion of St. Paul - "all things to all men") can use the humor and goofiness to broach more serious topics of redemption, faith, forgiveness, etc...
hey pete...I don't know if you remember me but I was at that retreat in Nanticoke, PA with you a few weeks back...anyways when i read this blog i got pretty excited because although spiderman 3 wasn't the greatest of movies I really loved the one scene in the church that Fr. Mike was talking about- when I first saw the movie I was actually thinking about using it for a retreat talk once its out on video...
so yea although its definitly not a fantastic movie i reccomend seeing it. If you can get past the "goofy" aspects of it, the movie actually has some great messages about overcoming pride and about how our own sins effect others and can lead them to sin
Yeah, I remember you Catie - hello! Thanks for the comments on Spiderman III ... also, check out the second blog post called "Evangelizing and Weakness" - at the bottom I discuss a bit of the "dating game" skit you guys did for the retreat... good stuff!
